While these terms are often considered synonymous and frequently used interchangeably, there’s been enough divergence in these subgenre categories since their emergence in the mid-to-late ‘90s and subsequent explosion throughout the ‘00s that warrants serious discussion. If there’s an area of heavy music worthy of detailed analysis and writerly dissection, it’s the curious, liminal zone that exists between metalcore and metallic hardcore.
